It appeared out of nowhere.
One day I looked at the mirror and noticed a sort of dark shadow under my nose. I thought it must be some dust or dirt, so I stuck my finger in my mouth to wet my finger and then tried to rub it off. But it didn’t budge.
To my shock and dismay I realized I had somehow acquired a mustache!
It wasn’t hairy, but I could definitely see a discoloration appearing between my lips and schnoz!
I was too mortified to say anything to my husband, so I waited until I was alone with my sister and asked her if she could see what I was seeing. Being the nice person she is, she said she could only see it because I had pointed it out to her, but the damage was done. If I could see it, and she could see it, then everyone could see it!
The first thing I did was google everything about skin discoloration. After much research I decided I had melasma.
Melasma is a woman’s skin condition brought on by hormones and exacerbated by the sun. It usually manifests as dark patches of skin on the face, and is often referred to as “the mask of pregnancy” because for many women, that is when they experience it.
Did I mention my mustache appeared when I was pregnant?
Unfortunately, my melasma never cleared up even after I gave birth.
Last year I made a video of my morning and evening skin care routine, and in it I mentioned my struggle with melasma. One of my dear readers, Christy Garrett, got in contact with me because she is a skincare consultant for Rodan + Fields, a company that has a few skincare lines including one for melasma. Rodan + Fields is created by Dr. Katie Rodan & Dr. Kathy Fields, two Stanford trained dermatologists who also formulated ProActiv Solution!
She graciously gifted me a 60 day trial of the Rodan + Fields REVERSE regimen with the accelerator pack which is specifically designed to target melasma to see if it would work for me. I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a shot.
Ladies, it has been 60 days, and *SPOILER ALERT I have to say, I am thrilled with the results!
Doesn’t my skin look so much brighter?
FULL DISCLOSURE: These pictures were taken around the same time of day in the same room with the same camera (iphone). I have done NOTHING to them.
But lets back up and go on a little journey of the past 60 days.
First of all, Christy did a wonderful job with her personal skin consultation. This is a key step in the whole process because it is vital you speak with someone who is an expert in regards to the Rodan + Fields products. I would also like to mention she was amazing at following up with me to make sure everything was working correctly and to answer any questions I had.
The REVERSE regimen is supposed to brighten and smooth out skin discoloration.
The instructions were to start by washing my face every morning with the deep exfoliating wash to get rid of old skin cells, followed by the toner, and then the skin brightening cream. It is also extremely important to wear the 50 SPF sunscreen that comes with the regimen.
Lets go through my thoughts of each product:
- Deep Exfoliating Wash: First of all, I loved the smell of all of the products. It has a bright, citrusy scent that I adored. The exfoliating wash wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but I also have skin that is not very sensitive and loves to be exfoliated.
- Toner: I have never been a big fan of toner and never use it. I have always found it completely dried out my skin and then it itches like crazy! But I figured I would try this toner, for science. Happily I discovered it didn’t make me dry out at all!
- Skin Brightening Cream: With 2% hydroquinone, I was positive this cream would work. I loved the way it smelled, but the cream itself is quite thick. I barely had to use any for it to cover my whole face.
- Sunscreen SPF 50: This was a little bit thicker than the sunscreen I usually wear but I found it didn’t react with my foundation, which is a good thing. I am very picky about my sunscreen and would say I liked this better than the Murad I wear but not quite as much as the Missha I also use.
I didn’t follow the skincare routine the way I supposed to.
You are supposed to start by using all the skincare products once a day, in the morning, every other day. I switched this to the evening and didn’t apply the sunscreen until the morning. The reason I switched is because I was already in the habit of washing my face at night and then putting on cream. I figured it would be easier to help me remember if I added it to an already existing routine.
After a few weeks of every other day you up it to every day. I was pretty good about this but there were evenings I didn’t bother to do the routine. After 30 days I felt like I didn’t see much of a change and was a bit disappointed. But I also knew it takes time for melasma to clear up, so instead of quitting, I continued and began the twice a day routine.
So here is the other way I didn’t follow directions.
I didn’t like the way the brightening cream felt and reacted to my makeup. So I decided to only use the toner in the morning, followed by the sunscreen, and then in the evening I exfoliated my face and then added the brightening cream.
After 30 days of this routine I was thrilled to see my face getting brighter and brighter and my melasma fading!
Because it took 60 days and the difference was so gradual, I thought there really wasn’t much of a change until I put the photographs together for this post.
Wow! What a difference!
I knew I felt like my skin was better, but I wasn’t sure if it was actually just wishful thinking. Turns out it really did work!
Even though I got my first 60 days gifted to me, I fully intend on purchasing this skincare routine and continuing on for the future. I can only use the accelerator pack for up to 6 months because there are some issues with using hydroquinone for long lengths of time. So when my time is up I will switch to the regular REVERSE package and hope that it continues to maintain my new glowing skin!
If you have melasma, then I highly recommend the Rodan + Fields REVERSE treatment. However, it is really important that you speak with Christy because she can make sure you actually have melasma and not some other kind of issue.
REVERSE was the regimen to target my needs, but R+F has three other core regimens to target a variety of skin care needs in addition to other tools and enhancement products. REDEFINE for anti-aging, UNBLEMISH for acne and post acne marks, and SOOTHE for sensitive or irritated skin.
Go to Christy’s website to take the Solution Tool for a customized plan for your skin care needs and contact information. Be sure to email a copy of the results to yourself! She would love to help you with the products or to discuss the opportunity to do what she does as an independent consultant in this business. She can help customize your plan and explain the benefits of enrolling through her website with the PC (Preferred Customer) Perks plan to save money on products and shipping.
Anyone that signs up through her website as a Preferred Customer (not a retail website order) and emails her they did so through this post by The Glamorous Housewife will be eligible for a special gift. Because the creams are quite expensive, I would suggest starting with only the Accelerator Pack and using your own sun cream. But you MUST WEAR SUN CREAM when using the accelerator pack. Actually, you really should be wearing sunscreen no matter what, but if you have melasma, SUN IS YOUR ENEMY! If you use the accelerator pack and don’t wear sunscreen, your melasma will get WORSE!
You have been warned.
This is my favorite sunscreen. Highly recommend.
