I am guilty of waking up first thing in the morning and immediately going downstairs to make my morning cup of tea and then surf the net. The next thing I know the kids are up and I need to make them breakfast, pack their lunches, and make sure they get to school on time. The last thing I am thinking about is making my bed.
With that said, there is something about making my bed that makes me feel relaxed. So why do I skip out on this feeling before starting my day?
I have decided that I am going to combine making my bed with being mindful.
I am going to start making my bed as soon as I get up and I am going to pay careful attention to every detail such as pressing the sheets with my hand to flatten out the creases and the way I stack my pillows. I’m not going to rush through it because I want to focus on what I am doing at that moment. The intention is that this morning ritual will set a tone of mindfulness for the rest of my day.
If you are like me and you don’t make your bed, try this technique for a week and see if gives you any benefits. And for those of you who already make your bed each morning, why don’t you try using it as a time to be mindful of what you are doing instead of rushing through it to get going with your day.
