Slow down and take a breath!
If you are anything like me then sitting still for three minutes and meditating seems absurd and impossible. How do you even do that? If you have a family and small children you are lucky to even have alone time while using the bathroom. My days are so hectic that sometimes it’s hard to breathe.
But breathing is an incredibly important part of living. It feeds oxygen to every cell in the body and without enough oxygen, people are more prone to health problems, including respiratory illnesses, and even heart disease. Did you know that a vast majority of the human population only use 50% of their lung capacity during most daily activities?
Here’s an exercise you can try that I have found to help me in my attempt to be more mindful. Take a simple daily routine such as brushing your teeth in the morning and use it as a trigger to prompt you to be more mindful. As you are brushing your teeth find relaxation by being fully present and aware of what you are doing. Take a full 6 count breath through your nose and fill up your lungs and exhale through your nose for 6 counts. You will find that this simple action will calm you down, and you will be reminded to live each moment with intention.
