Ever have a conversation with someone and in the end you simply have no idea what they just said? I have and I find that the reason this happens is because while the person is speaking, I’m in my own head thinking about what I am going to say next and I forget to actually listen to what they have to say.
There is a lot to be said in being fully engaged with someone when they speak and just listen to what they are saying. Next time you have a conversation with someone, use that opportunity to practice your listening skills and don’t talk about yourself unless you are asked. Focus on the person you are speaking to and ask them questions pertaining to themselves. You may find it liberating to get out of your own head and the person who you are listening to will feel that you care!
