Three years ago my husband was tired all the time.
I chalked it up to the fact we had a baby and neither of us were getting much rest.
But as the baby began to sleep better, my husband never stopped feeling run down. He just wanted to lie down in bed for hours at a time. He also seemed to get sick. A lot.
It wasn’t as if one day he was perfectly fine and the next day he was struggling to get out of bed. It was a very slow descent into lethargy.
I was incredibly frustrated because I thought he was just being lazy. I begged him to go see a doctor, which eventually, after a year of feeling drained, he finally did.
Our doctor told my husband he has something called Hashimoto’s disease.
Basically his body turned on himself and attacked his thyroid because his body believed it to be a foreign substance. The thyroid is responsible for “produc(ing) hormones that coordinate many of your body’s activities”. His thyroid was destroyed, which is why he had gained a lot of weight, was tired all the time, and was constantly getting sick.
So the doctor put him on Synthroid, which what pretty much anyone takes if they have no thyroid. We thought that would be the end of it.
Turns out not so much.
Though he did feel like he had more energy, he never really lost the weight and he was still getting sick all of the time. It has been three years of only having half of a partner and I did not handle it very well. I felt like if I had Hashimoto’s I would do everything in my power to try and feel good, but my husband was only taking the doctor’s word that all of his thyroid levels were just fine. Well if they were just fine then why did he feel like crap?
So finally, about six weeks ago I felt like I had enough. If my husband wasn’t going to take care of himself then I needed to step up and figure it out.
So I started researching Hashimotos online. I am not going to go into everything I learned, but what blew my mind was the link between symptoms of lower gut issues like IBS, Chrones, and Celiac with acquiring Hashimoto’s! I’m not going to go into details, but my husband has had lower bowl issues his entire life! Was this the key to helping my husband get better?
It appears as if the molecules of the thyroid and the molecules of gluten look almost exactly alike to your body. My husband’s body had been attacking gluten for so long that it decided to go ahead and attack the thyroid as well. Even though my husband had fixed the thyroid problem, he hadn’t addressed the gluten issue. This was why he felt crappy all the time!
So we both decided to go on a gluten free diet. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed how I have lost close to 15 pounds since February! I have also discussed it on a few of my Friday newsletter videos. It is mostly due to cutting way back on alcohol and getting rid of sugar and gluten in my diet!
Because I don’t have a gluten intolerance, my diet has been fantastic with losing weight and feeling like I have a ton of energy! And it gave me back 60% of my husband. But there was still 40% of him that still didn’t feel well. There seemed to be something missing.
It turns out that because my husband’s lower gut had been sick for decades, even though it was healing it needed some “good bacteria” to help it completely repair itself. That is where probiotics came into play.
A few days after I had discovered the probiotic issue, I received an opportunity to try Align Probiotics. Of course I jumped at the chance! Who wouldn’t? Align Probiotics are a pill that brings pure-strain probiotic bacteria Bifantis to your digestive system. It basically means it introduces and maintains the good bacteria to your digestive system with continued daily use.
My husband has been using them for a week and he says without a doubt they have made him feel at least 10% better than before he started taking them! Because his gut was at such a weakened state, I think it will take him at least a month to get the full benefit from Align Probiotics. But even 10% is better than nothing!
As a matter of fact, because he seemed so happy with them, I decided to start using them as well. Now, to be totally honest, I was feeling pretty awesome before I started. And I will admit, things seem to be “flowing” a bit more smoothly, if you know what I mean. It seems to me that probiotics are just as important as taking a daily vitamin! For those that have bowel issues, it can only help, and for those that have perfectly fine digestion, it certainly can’t hurt!
The good news is, you can save 15% on Align Probiotic products at Target until 7/19 by clicking HERE.
The reason I mention this story is two fold. First of all Hashimoto’s is very common in middle aged women, which is a large portion of who reads my blog. I thought it possible that at least one of you will read my story and recognize yourself in my husband’s symptoms. If you are feeling any of these symptoms, please get your thyroid tested!
The second reason is to try and help you learn from my fail. I feel terrible that I held a grudge against my husband for something he couldn’t help! I really thought he was being lazy, when in actuality he was sick! I should have known something was wrong and forced him to do something about it a lot earlier than I did.
My questions to you ladies are, do you know anyone with Hashimoto’s disease? Did they try a gluten free diet and/or probiotics to help them feel better? Have you ever taken probiotics and if so, do you think it helped you in any way?

If you feel as if you or your partner might have either Hashimoto’s or a lower gut issue, please see your doctor. As for the Align Probiotics, this product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease! But it DID make both my husband and I feel better than before we started taking it.
