Sometimes budgeting can feel overwhelming and complicated.
Trying to stay on top of bills, put money aside and keep track or receipts and things can make it seem like it’s all too much, but in some ways budgeting can actually help you simplify life.
One of the ways in which I’ve used budgeting to help simplify my life every day is in relation to my wardrobe.
I love clothes and vintage clothing in particular and over the years I have accumulated more clothes than I needed and had a few things that I rarely, if ever, wore.
Whether it’s because they are too small or you don’t know what to wear them with or they aren’t really your style anymore there are generally things in your wardrobe that sit there taking up space and making it more difficult for you to organize your things and choose what to wear.
I wanted to organize my wardrobe and save money on clothing. So I decided that a good way to kill two birds with one stone would be to go through all of my clothing and have a really good clear out. Anything that didn’t fit, or hadn’t been worn in at least two years needed to go. I did make a few exceptions for an item or two that had sentimental attachment but other than that I widdled down my wardrobe to about 10 outfits that I really really love and everything else got put aside to either sell or donate.
This exercise proved not only to be good for my budget in that I made a bit of money selling the items I didn’t want, it also meant that it made it so much easier to choose what I wanted to wear in the morning because there were fewer items to pick from. Plus everything I kept were things I love to wear!
It also didn’t hurt that it gave me a little more room in my wardrobe so my bedroom could be a bit tidier.
The other rule I have instated for future purchases is that things need to be budgeted for, ideally something I need or something that I love so much I am willing to get rid of one thing I have, to replace it with the new item.
Of course I know there will be times when I find something spectacular that I just cannot resist and will purchase something unplanned, but hopefully those times will be fewer and farther between. Wish me luck, because if I can stick to it then my closet will remain roomy and my wallet full.
