Our closets are filled to the brim with clothes. Clothes we like. Clothes we don’t like. Clothes we often wear. Clothes we never wear.
We acquired these clothes for various reasons. They were on sale. We thought we’d look good in them. They were a gift.
We can’t get rid of them for various reasons. “I spent so much on this top, I can’t get rid of it!”, “I know I never wear this but it was such a good deal!”, “My mom gave me that skirt, she’d be heartbroken if I let it go!”
The truth is, we need to clear out a vast majority of our clothes. We need to get radical. We need to get rid. Our overstuffed closets are causing too much confusion for us. We have no shopping game plan. Anything goes. Our true style is clouded. Do we even know what our true style is? It’s all so overwhelming that, even though we have this closet of clothes, we just wear yoga pants every day. We’ve thrown in the towel.
Enter the ten-item wardrobe.
The “ten” refers to the core items in your wardrobe. These are the foundational pieces that you can build outfits with: dresses, skirts, pants, jeans, blouses and tops are all considered core items. The “extras” in your ten-item wardrobe are all of the items that either compliment your core items, such as tee shirts, sweaters and outerwear; or garments that you don’t wear as often, such as evening wear. Accessories like shoes, hats and jewelry are also considered extras.
A well-composed ten-item wardrobe is a thing of beauty. Over time you will learn what type of clothes work best for your lifestyle. You will hone in on your true style and love every single piece you have. You will eliminate mindless shopping and save so much money in the long run. Paradoxically, you will acquire higher-quality clothes and become more conscious about the clothes you do buy. It will be so easy to choose your outfit every morning because you know you look great in every piece you have. Everything “goes” with everything else. You will be inspired to wear your best clothes every day and look presentable always. You will never resort to yoga pants again because you couldn’t find anything to wear. You will bask in its simplicity and you will never go back.
