The first birthday I had after I got married was one that will live in infamy.
Both my husband and I worked in the movie industry and we were working crazy long hours with only one day off a week. Unfortunately those days off never seemed to align with one another.
But somehow the gods smiled upon us and on my birthday we were both not working and could spend the entire day together, which is really all I wanted to do.
That morning my husband told me he had to go out and get my birthday present. I insisted I didn’t need anything but he was adamant that he had to get me something to celebrate and hinted it was going to be big! I gave him a quick kiss good-bye and wondered what could possibly be so important.
Six hours later he came back.
Six……. Hours…… Later……
I was not happy.
I did my best to control the rage that had been bubbling up inside of me as I waited for him to return and decided to focus on whatever thrilling thing he had purchased for me.
He said it was too big to wrap so I should shut my eyes.
Breathless with excitement I finally opened my eyes to see….
A VACUUM CLEANER
He had gone to every store in a 50 mile radius to buy me a vacuum cleaner.
I burst into tears!
To this day I feel really guilty about my reaction. I can now appreciate that he thought this was an expensive gift that would make my life easier, but all I could think of was the fact he got me something so detested. He knew I hated to clean!
After 15 years together the memory is one that makes me laugh. I realized I needed to be more clear about my expectations and I had to teach my beloved what types of gifts I would prefer to receive. Though it was traumatizing at the time, it ended up being a fantastic learning experience and it only strengthened our early marital bonds.
So why the long silly story? Mother’s Day is coming up and I thought I might help the husbands of my dear readers, including my own, to find the best Mother’s Day gifts. I figure those of you who find something you like in the gift guide can Facebook or email this post to your hubby with a gentle reminder that Mother’s Day is coming up and what you would like to receive. Honestly, I would be thrilled to unwrap any of these delightful items and I hope you enjoy my picks.
