When it comes to cleaning out my closet I am ruthless! You would think with all of the pretty clothing I purchase over the course of a year I would have a jam packed closet full of clothing I adore. Ok, that’s actually true, which is why I have to be so strict when my closet starts to overflow. I am a huge believer in only buying what you love but sometimes I make mistakes and other times I love something for only a few months and then I am over it. I have also changed sizes in the past few years, growing from a size 4 to a size 6/8. Most of my original vintage clothing I bought when I first started this blog is now too small and getting rid of it has been very difficult for me. But get rid of it I must because there is just no use in gorgeous frocks collecting dust in my closet when they could be getting use in someone else’s wardrobe.
(I just realized this sounds like a pitch to shop my closet, which it is but I am not going to be the one selling it. My sister-in-law has an online vintage store and the items will end up there. I will let you know when they go on sale.)
With the seasons changing I figured now was as good a time as any to do a closet purge. Things were getting stuffed in too tightly and then my beloved dresses were wrinkling and getting messy even though they were hanging up perfectly straight! I also decided enough was enough and it was time to upgrade my hangers. I had old plastic hangers that were ruining some of my more delicate items and they were tangling on the spaghetti straps of my sundresses. So out with the plastic and in with the fuzzy hangers. I like these much better because they keep the shoulders as they should be and my wider necked frocks stay perfectly in place. They are also a lot thinner than the plastic hangers, which gives me more room in the closet.
There are a million blog posts and articles on how to clean out your closet and transfer your summer clothing to winter storage. This isn’t that post. This is about the real reason you should clean out your closet: A uncluttered closet equals a clear mind. What do I mean by that?
Think about your morning routine. When you step out of the shower and need to decide the eternal question of what to wear, are you excited by the prospect or are you dreading opening the closet door? Is it a fight to get the dress you decided to wear out of the closet because the hangers are so tangled up or can you easily go through the items and find what you want to wear? Are you constantly just grabbing the shirt that is on top of the drawer because you can’t even be bothered to fight through the rest of them to get to what you really want to wear because who has time to re-stack the mess you made? You see where I am going with this.
A clutter free closet filled with clothing you absolutely adore and fits is the ultimate goal. Who has time to ponder what to wear everyday? If you love everything in your wardrobe then figuring out your daily outfit should be a breeze! You should never spend more than a minute or two deciding on your clothing, and the only reason it should go longer is because you have too many things you love and want to wear all the clothes!
I have always wondered why people have closets stuffed with clothing that they don’t particularly like and frankly, doesn’t even fit anymore. It just seems like such a waste of space to store things that make you unhappy. Yes, I get it feels like a total waste of money to get rid of “perfectly good” clothing. I also understand the memories attached to different garments. But isn’t it better to just start fresh and clear your closet of the negativity? Because I have found when I cull my wardrobe to just the items that I love and look good on me, I feel so much better about myself! There is no size 2 dress mocking me because I haven’t been that size in six years. There is no size 10 dress reminding me that if I eat that piece of cake I still have something to wear. And I especially like the fact that my clutter free closet makes it just that much easier to get dressed in the morning.
So if you have a closet that needs to be organized, stop putting it off and get to work! Now is the perfect time to go though everything and get rid of the clothing that makes you feel like crap. It might be difficult but I assure you when you are finished and the only thing in your closet looks beautiful on you, there will be no regrets.
