One of my favorite things to do on this blog is find new and exciting artists and craftspeople and introduce them to my beloved readers. I believe we are all creative people and seeing how others have turned their talents into a profession is interesting to me, and I assume to you as well. That is why I am thrilled to bring to you my newest find: Jubly-Umph Originals.
Jubly-Umph is the brainchild of Tasha Miller, aka artist extraordinaire. To be totally honest, Tasha found me first. She is a blog reader and thought you might be interested in her tattoo inspired creations. The minute I saw her website I was smitten and knew she was a kindred spirit. I had the pleasure of interviewing Tasha about how she got started, a peek into her brain as she puts together her collections, and what inspires her each and every day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I see you are incredibly talented. Have you always been into art? At what age did you know you were going to be an artist?
I always wanted to be a writer actually, and still do, and the art thing just happened on the side. I was 26 before I started intensely drawing every day and actively trying to participate in exhibitions and make money from my art.
Do you have an education in art or are you self trained?
I never studied art but I always scribbled and doodled. In 2008 I got back from a stint overseas and decided to really concentrate on drawing and develop a product from that mainly due to the fact that I didn’t want to get a proper job.
What kinds of things inspire you? What colors do you gravitate towards?
Lately I have been mainly inspired by all things cute and kitsch and this has been the basis for my latest collection. Kitsch is such a broad theme that I have been able to bundle up lots of little designs and fit them all together. I am a bit obsessed by teal blue at the moment and brilliant fire engine red. Sometimes I have to go back and start paintings from scratch as I have realized I have used these colors too much.
Briefly explain how you put together a collection. Do you start from something triggering your inspiration and then work forward? What is your process?
Sometimes I start with an idea or theme in mind and do hundreds of sketches if ideas around that theme and then develop those sketches into 7 or 8 drawings I will use. Other times I start with one painting and decide to expand it to become a collection.
Who are your top 3-4 favorite artists? Why?
I am obsessed with tattoo artists and follow about 100 of them on social media. I just love seeing new work and ideas in tattoo art. Aside from that my two favorite artist/ writers are Edward Gorey and Chas Addams.
Jubly-Umph has everything, from jewelry to throw pillows, wallets to original wall art. If you enjoy Tasha’s artwork as much as I do, then be sure to visit her online store (HERE). And I have good news! Not only is Tasha giving everyone 10% off of her store by using the code: GLAM, she is also sponsoring a WORLD WIDE give-away of her new sewing machine necklace (HERE)! How cool is that? In order to enter, all you need to do is leave a comment here telling us what your favorite item is in her store (besides the sewing machine necklace). You also need to leave a CURRENT email address so we can contact you if you win. This contest ends at midnight on June 10 PST. Good luck!
