Last week I wrote about my struggles with depression and it really seemed to touch a cord with so many of you. I know everyone can fall into a funk every now and again, and though my anxiety is severe enough to necessitate pills, not everyone needs to run to the drug store when they are feeling a little blue. Even with my medication I fight ennui from time to time. So I thought I would put together a list of ways to get yourself out of a funk that don’t include medication.
When it comes to being in a rut, usually doing something to shake up your routine will work.
Do you feel like you are spending too much time in front of the screen? Step away and doing something with your hands, like an easy craft.
Do you feel lonely and not connected to people? Make a date with a best friend or loved one for a meal. Or even coffee. We all need companionship and what better way to feel connected than to actually do something with someone instead of calling or emailing?
Do you feel fat? I know I get depressed when I feel unhealthy. Though it takes all of my willpower, I try to go for a long walk when feeling like a big tub of lard. There is something so refreshing about being out in the air and around nature that I usually feel better by the time I get home.
Do you feel like you need a shot of creativity? Why not go to your local bookstore and find a book on a subject you are interested in but never read about before. I know I once got on a huge Dorothy Parker kick because I was bored one day and just grabbed a book about her. I ended up being so obsessed I named my first cat after her.
Are you tired of your husband and/or kids? This is a bit more difficult, but see if you can go away for a night or two. You don’t even have to stay in a fancy hotel. You could always crash at a friend’s house and have an adult sleepover party.
Do you feel depressed because you feel like are stuck and can’t get out of it? Why not try volunteering for a homeless shelter. Helping others less fortunate than you not only helps them but also puts your worries into perspective. Plus the act of selflessness is always a good one.
If all of these things fail you can always go all out and wallow in your sadness for a day. Buy onion dip and potato chips, rent some movies off of Netflix, don’t get out of your pajamas or brush your teeth and lay in bed and make a pig out of yourself for a full 24 hours. Then get up the next day, take a shower, and leave all of your feelings in the past and move on.
Of course there are many other ways to get out of a funk. What is your favorite way to restart your rut?
