A few weeks ago I wrote a post (here) comparing a “vintage” style woman to a “classic” style woman. At the time I was only trying to convey the nuances of a vintage woman and how the style was actually quite classic in taste with only a few variables. But that article got me thinking about other types of classic design. I have been ruminating over this topic in my mind and I thought I would finally put down in words my abstract thoughts on the subject.
As I see it, there are actually four types of classic women: modern, preppy, glamorous, and vintage. Of course women are not cartoons- you will probably see a bit of yourself in each type, but I imagine one will resonate with you more than the others. Read on to see which type you think you are.
The modern-classic woman is interested in looking stylish but with a classic foundation. She loves clean lines and simplicity, and the streamlined aesthetics of the 1920s and mid-century modern are probably her favorite. She is aware of the fashion trends, but doesn’t partake in them unless she find they correlate to her style. The women I would associate with modern classic is Gwenyth Paltrow.
With a rich history in classic style, the preppy-classic woman is all about stylish comfort. Think Jackie O or Kate Spade. Color abounds, sometimes with loud prints (Lilly Pulitzer) and other times in basic solids (Lactose). Plaids, stripes, and monograms are certain hallmarks of the preppy-classic style.
Elegant! Wealthy! Glitter! Sparkle! Feathers! Diamonds! All of these adjectives will describe the classic glamour girl. Of course one doesn’t actually have to be wealthy in order to look like a million bucks, and the classic glamorous woman knows that so long as the cut of the outfit is perfect she will look fabulous no matter how much she spent. Allure is just one way the glamorous woman keeps herself looking chic, along with red lips, high heels, and a dedicated attention to detail. Dita Von Teese is the perfect example of the classic glamour girl.
Having gone into length about the classic vintage lady (here), I will reiterate by saying the love of decades past is the hallmark of this type of fashion. Many will wear actual vintage garments or perfect reproductions of clothing from a bygone era. Often times a vintage woman will have a home filled with thrift shop finds and listen to music from days of yore.
Of course these are very basic outlines of the different types of classically styled women. I would say I am mostly an equal combination of glamorous and vintage with a touch of preppy. I admire the classic modern look, and often pin images that I think fall in this category, but when I attempt to try it myself I find it to be a little too austere for my taste, though I appreciate it in others.
So tell me, do you agree with my four types of classic women? Do you see yourself in any of these definitions? Or do you have a fifth type that doesn’t fall into any of these categories? Please tell me your thoughts in the comments, I am very curious to read what you have to say on this matter.
