A vintage Tiki party is a perfect theme for a summer soiree! Here are suggestions for food, fashion and decorations.
Ah, the tiki party- a bastion of retro culture since the 1930s. Though I suppose in the 1930s it wouldn’t of been considered “vintage”! My husband and I are huge fans of Hawaiiana and in our old house our entire living room was dedicated to the tiki. For a while I was obsessed with Shag and we own three of his prints. Once I thought I saw him at a local fair but I was too shy to approach him. *Sigh. And yet for some reason, I have never thrown a proper tiki party before? I know! Shocking! But it is true. I guess I thought they were kind of cheesy. I always kept my tiki decor refined- no fake grass matting or plastic coconuts which are so prevalent in a typical tiki soiree. I decided to put together a glamorous tiki party inspiration post and I think you will agree, if this was a real party it would walk that fine line between kitsch and sophistication.
How To Decorate
I thought this photo perfectly exemplified the look I was going for: bright tropical colors and flowers and only a few subtle tiki touches. (here)
For the tables I thought the watermelon as centerpieces was both gorgeous to look at and practical. (here)
For a cheesy tiki bar, this one is fairly chic and it is on sale which is always a bonus. (here)
Technically these are not vintage, but they are also not plastic which is a win in my book. (here)
What To Serve
Who doesn’t love chicken satay? It is easy to make, holds up all day long, and is pretty healthy when it comes to party food! (here)
I am a huge salad fan, so I always have plenty of them at my parties. I thought this mango and jicama salad would be refreshing and a perfect compliment to the chicken. (here)
You can’t have chicken satay without coconut rice! I have made this recipe a few times and it always comes out perfectly. (here)

What To Wear
Finally, I thought this tropical bird dress was in such a pretty shade of green I just had to share. (here) So are you inspired to throw a tiki party? I know I am! To be totally honest, I purchased both of those Trashy Diva dresses and when they come I think I might have to throw this party just so I have an excuse to wear one of them! What, you never threw a party because you bought a pretty dress before?
