After going on the highly inspirational garden tour, I knew I had to do something about my little garden. I had pulled up all the plants in one section of my landscape and had planned on planting a vegetable garden. But it really was just a dirt pile for about two months. Once I saw the gardens I realized that what I really wanted to plant was flowers, tons and tons of flowers. So off I went to my local gardening center and I just bought whatever caught my eye. Well, that isn’t entirely true. I knew I wanted something tall near the fence, and I knew I wanted to use pinks, yellows, and oranges with pops of blue or purple. I also knew I wanted at least one tomato plant.
Here is what the garden and flower containers looked like before:
You can see that I have tried to keep the flower boxes full, but the sprinklers were turned off for some reason and most of the plants died from lack of water. Have I mentioned I have a black thumb when it comes to gardening? I find it a miracle my kids have lived for so long! Even though my luck with gardens is terrible, I still love to sit on my front porch and look at pretty flowers, so here is what I planted:
Color! Flowers! A turquoise gnome! Doesn’t that make a huge difference?
Here you can see my gnome guarding my tomato plant.
I wouldn’t want my tomatoes to be eaten by these guys, hence why they need protection. Well, that and the snails.
For the planters I just pulled out the dead flowers and put in new ones. I used the same items from the bigger garden so everything is color coordinated.
You can see I am a sucker for garden gnomes. I love kitschy garden figures. Want to see my favorite?
I have a 4 foot tall flamingo! Love it! This area needs to be tackled, but I think I will make my husband do it. I am thinking a jasmine vine along the wall and then more bright flowers around the flamingo.
So there you have it! The before and after of my garden. There is still a lot I would like to do but for now I am very happy with my little bit of soil.
