The Real Housewives With Beehives
Well, ok- just one housewife. And I guess it isn’t technically a beehive. But I did a major poof and thought the title of this post would be funny. Did you see Wives With Beehives? I was very disappointed because it was painfully obvious the story line was made up. I guess producers (read: males) are more interested in cattiness and forced rudeness instead of camaraderie and the beauty of the vintage lifestyle. *rolls eyes. Maybe one day Hollywood will clue into the thousands of us who adore the aesthetics of the mid-century without resorting to a cartoon depiction of who we are. But until then we have our beloved blogs!
Do you remember the post I wrote about my family’s tradition of funny presents? Well this book was my gift from my sister. You can’t teach your baby the basics of HTML too early, can you?
Outfit details: Sweater, Skirt, Shoes, Jewelry (old but similar here and here).

**Edited to add: A few of you were requesting a hair tutorial. I did one on this video, but it is the last one shown and starts at 5:24.

Miss Glamorous is just TOO gorgeous for words!
Thanks my dear. And she knows it as well. I swear she plays up to the camera already! I don’t know where she gets it? LOL!
Although I did not watch the “Beehives” episode (I didn’t even know the show existed), TLC’s promos alone on the website you posted make these well-intentioned ladies seem like vapid cave-women.
I am trying to integrate the aesthetic your blog portrays into my own life but can still function in the modern world as the college professor (and former Women’s Studies minor) I am–of course, not to the extreme of the “Beehive” ladies. I just started following your blog and am impressed by your sensibility of taking the elegance of the past coupled with the convenience of modernity.
Side note, I just love those shoes!
Love your outfit! I haven’t seen Wives with Beehives but I am friends with Dollie. She was absolutely devastated over how the producers portrayed her. She is the sweetest gal. She has quite a bit to say about the entire experience on her blog. I urge everyone to look it up.
PS – I think we need a hair tutorial!
OOOOooo there are far too many things to love about these pictures!! You are so very beautiful!!
Those producers are jerks, they couldn’t deal with the fact that they picked normal run-of-the-mill people who are drama free for their show, they had to add some. And shame on them for it. Thank you for posting about this. I, like a lot of people I’m sure, heard about the TV show before seeing Miss Dollie DeVille’s side of the story. And boy did those TV people lead these poor women astray! It’s pretty ridiculous.
xoxo, Jess
They all looked so beautiful on the show but it was so choppy you could tell they were really editing their words around. When they went to What Katie Did to buy Shelby a present I thought that was a bit risque for someone they supposedly just met, but when they were “house shopping” for Shelby that was when I knew it was hands-down fake. Like Shelby, I am also married to a military service member, and even an officer would have a tough time affording the gorgeous midmod mansion they were walking through. The way they portrayed the ladies on Wives with Beehives reminded me of the way they portrayed Doris Mayday on My Crazy Obsession- like a complete nutter or a cartoon.
You look positively lovely in these photos.
I haven’t had a chance to see that show yet, but I’ve been reading tons of very heated opinions on it across the web. As best I can judge without having seen it, I suspect I’d feel much the same way as you do about it. I love that the you took the title and gave the subject your own wonderful spin, complete with some seriously impressive hair volume!
♥ Jessica
You make beehives look good!!
I agree about the show and just did a post about it on my blog. They really missed the mark and now the ladies have to pick up the pieces. Luckily, they are all strong, modern women who can handle what is thrown at them.
Could you do a tutorial for this hair style? Looks great!
I added the link in the post but here is the direct link to the hair tutorial as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efHDXxvJZsI&list=UUhW8MpnbPsneT6xTl8sMQBw&index=10 The bouffant is the last one on the video and starts at 5:24. Enjoy!
Love your shoes and creative title!!
Read Dollie’s blog about her experience on the show. Very unfortunate.
You look so gorgeous! Love your style! I saw “Beehives” and I was so dissapointed in it! I wanted to learn more about where they shopped for vintage clothes and how they decorated their homes and how they cooked, etc. I thought those things would have been so fascinating. I was so sad to see that they made it so cheesy and about how woman can’t get along and are catty and mean. Jeepers! I didn’t think that was the real deal at all! Those poor ladies!
Happy New Year! Angie xo
You look beautiful, perfect really. Nice job on the hair and I adore your skirt.
Funny book!

I’m not familiar with that show, but you look gorgeous, and your sweet little girl does, too. Also, I love her changing table. Is that a repurposed locker system?
I am not sure if it is repurposed or new to look old. But it is a locker-like set of drawers.
I watched Housewives with Beehives hoping it would be a nice glimpse at how women live a vintage lifestyle. I was really disappointed in the show and how staged and fake it was.
I was looking at various vintage blogs the other day, following links from one to another, and I accidentally came across the blog of Dollie from the show. Here is the link to her blog where she wrote about how the producers of the show manipulated her and the situation to get what they wanted.

I already had a low opinion of this type of show even though I occasionally did indulge, but after reading this I don’t know that I’ll ever watch one again.
Yes I read her blog post and linked to it in my post, but thank you for posting it here in the comments. I think everyone should read it and see what they did to those women. Such a shame because the vintage lifestyle is so fun!
aww how delightful … I think the pair of you would take the real mummies and bubbies show genre by storm
best Le
Your peeps (sold out, I checked) and bracelets have me drooling. I might dust a necklace I inherited from my mum.
Love your blog!
XOXO,
Cristina
