An Ode To The Commode.

I could not resist naming my title of this post something funny, because today we are going to talk about something that is a little, shall we say….. indiscreet. We are going to discuss my toilet.

Well, not so much the commode itself, more about the fact I finally got around to decorating my toilet room! Yes, this glamorous housewife has her own, private privy. When my husband and I designed our home the first thing on my list was my own toilet. And let me tell you, best. decision. ever. Now I know the vast majority of people in this world do not have his & her water closets, so that isn’t what this post is about. This is about taking something that seems trivial, like the bathroom, and making it a place that is glamorous.

I didn’t take any before pictures because ewwwww, but suffice it to say I had my powders and potions lined up on the shelf you see above, and my monthly unmentionables in a paper sack next to the commode! For three years! It was not cute. I don’t know why it took me so long to make this room pretty, I guess I just had more important things to take care of. But when it comes right down to it, shouldn’t the one place I get total privacy be important enough to be visually soothing? Yes, yes it should. So with that in mind, I decided to clear the clutter and do a little decorating.

I started with purchasing the picture of the lady getting dressed to go out in her glamorous pink sparkly gown from Paper Fashion (here). Then I went on a bit of a shopping spree at Home Goods. Have I mentioned my love of Home Goods before? I find it just as thrilling as thrift shopping because the prices are so low and you can find the best stuff! I got the two boxes seen on the shelf to store my what-nots and I also found the two wire baskets seen below to store my toilet paper and lady items. Finally I added the stunning picture of the 1940s lady in a veiled hat, which I got from my wonderful new advertiser, Debra Lynn Mejia; isn’t it a beauty?

Now don’t judge, but I didn’t bother to put toilet paper in a holder. I just don’t have the time and patience to constantly be refilling it. So I prefer a stack of toilet paper just off to the side. And yes, that is probably way too much information that you really don’t need!

To decorate I added a pretty picture frame with a snap I took on Instagram . I will be doing a post this month on different ways to display your Instagram photos, so be sure to look out for that later on.  The vintage head vase was already part of my collection, as was the pretty pink and blue vase seen next to it. The shells have been with me for ages and I couldn’t even tell you where I got them all.

I had already purchased the light fixture, which is a vintage deco glass cover that I got on Ebay years ago. I adore it.

I also got the milk glass door knobs on Ebay. The tile is marble, which was a huge mistake. Yes, it looks pretty but is a disaster to keep clean. If I could do it again I would choose tile and a grey grout, not marble with white grout.

My point in discussing something as silly as a WC is to show you kittens that just because something is mundane doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful! Though I don’t spend much time in my toilet room, I still want it to be charming and inviting, and I didn’t spend much money at all! Though the wallpaper was there already and really does give a visual grandeur to the room, the same effect can be done with a bold coat of paint. So my question to you is, is there any space in your home that is dingy and in need of some glamour? It could be a laundry area, or a coat closet, or even your own toilet that needs some sprucing up. Why don’t you make time this month of January to making that area of your home resplendent? And then send me before/after pictures so I can see how you were inspired to make your home more glamorous.

  1. I love your light fixture. Absolutely beautiful.

We only have one bathroom in the house, but recently I’ve been thinking I want a new shower curtain and a vintage picture, wall hanging. It’s on my list.

You’ve created a really pretty, soothing space.

I used to think that overly-decorated bathrooms were terrible. But they were all in the beachy or fishes type of decorations. This, however, is lovely!! I would have never thought to make the bathroom so lovely! You don’t spend a lot of time there, certainly, but why would it have to be plain and *not* beautiful!
Now to find a Home Goods store!!

  6. What a strikingly beautiful bathroom. This truly looks like it was lifted out of the pages of the chicest of chic home decor magazines. From the splashes of pink to seashells to the lady’s head vase, I absolutely adore this glamorously lovely loo.
