Hello kittens, I am so excited to bring you The Glamorous Housewife’s first guest post ever! The wonderful Catherine from Cakewalk volunteered to write a guest post for me and she had the most exciting idea for a post! Catherine is a make-up lover and uses some retro fabulous products in her everyday routine. She has outlined a few of her favorites so everyone can try them. I am so excited to welcome Catherine as a bonafide Glamorous Housewife.
Catherine of Cakewalk’s Beauty Review:
I’m a huge beauty junkie and love to try new products each season, but I have a few trusty staples that are always in my beauty bag. My overall style is fairly classic, with a bit of trendy thrown in to mix things up, but I adore a simple, understated look when it comes to makeup. The products I use most are basics that any woman can wear well, and because they are timeless, they lend themselves to a vintage look.
Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder
For many years, I used a very expensive pressed powder to set my foundation, but because I went through it so quickly, I searched for a more affordable option. Then I remembered that my grandmother always used Coty’s Airspun Powder, which retails for about $7 at grocery and drugstores and is packaged in a large container, so it’s an excellent value. The powder is extremely lightweight and comparable to well-known mineral makeup brands, and it comes in several different shades. I apply it after my foundation, gently patting it on with the included puff and blending with a cosmetic brush, before lightly spritzing my face with water to set everything in place. I have oily skin and larger pores, and this powder completely disappears without settling into my skin at all. And the fact that my grandmother used it well into her 70s only adds to its timeless appeal. I even recognized the classic powder container in a scene from Mad Men!
Besame Cream Rouge
This cream rouge is probably my favorite vintage beauty product because it is so versatile. Created by a cosmetics historian, all of Bésame’s products are inspired by actual vintage products, and rouge is the blush of our grandmothers’ generation. Contained within a gorgeous, red tin, the cream can be blended into your cheeks and lips to create a classic look. A little goes a long way with this product, and I feel especially glamorous when I apply it. I adore the gorgeous packaging and saved the box for its loveliness. To use, you simply tap the tin lightly with your fingers, touch your cheeks or lips, and then blend gently to create the desired look.
Besame Violet Brightening Powder
Violet is a classic scent, and since I love it as a perfume, I was intrigued by this small container of brightening powder. The powder has a light scent and a violet tint, which causes the brightening effect. I keep this pretty compact in my purse for touch-ups on the go, and I love that it contains a small puff and sifter to avoid messes. You can also apply it under your eyes and across cheekbones to brighten and highlight dull areas. And, in true Bésame form, the packaging is stunning, too.
Besame Lip Liner
To successfully wear a red lip, a good lipliner truly helps, and I love this dual-sided, retractable pencil in two flattering shades of red. I typically line and gently fill in my entire lip before adding lipstick, and you can apply a little clear gloss to help the liner glide easily. My favorite feature is the retractable pencil, because I do not enjoy sharpening lip or eyeliner at all. And, since there are two sides to this clever tool, you get twice as much color, all in one!
Maybelline Color Sensational in Red Revival 645
While I tend to prefer pink shades, there is nothing more classic than a red lip, and this blue-based tone is extremely flattering on a variety of complexions. It is a simple red lipstick that offers great coverage and staying powder. I like to line my lips first, apply it lightly, and then add a little pink or clear gloss for shine. The color is also buildable, so it can be applied with a light hand for a more casual look, or you can add a bit more to be dramatic. Maybelline’s products are also extremely affordable, so this is another great vintage-inspired value.
These products are definitely my go-to pieces for a classic, vintage-inspired look. I like to pair them with a very neutral eyeshadow and basic black mascara for a simple and elegant makeup routine.
