The other day my brother, sister-in-law, and three kids including their brand new baby came into town, so I decided to throw a dinner party for everyone. My menu came easily, but I didn’t really have anything I wanted to use to decorate the table. I was bored of the same old table cloths, plates, etc. Tired of the same flowers, same set-up, and so on. So I went into my craft storage area to see if I could find something that piqued my interest, and way up high, on a shelf I never seem to look at, here is what I found:
I had forgotten all about this huge vintage wallpaper sample book. I opened it up and *instant inspiration!
Who wouldn’t be delighted to see so many colors and patterns? The book is quite large- over 18 inches square, so I thought the pages might make good place mats. I tore 9 of my favorite patterns out and laid them down on the table.
I liked the way it looked, but it just didn’t seem quite right. So I laid the pages end to end down the center of the table and voila! A perfect runner!
I ended up cutting one page into strips to make napkin rings, and then added some twine I had from this project. Here is a close up of the setting:
Cute, right? And the best part is, none of the pages got food on them so I can use them again! I was thinking about cutting them into triangles and making a banner out of them. Or maybe using them as matting for a photo collage.
Here is everyone having a great time. Notice the fried chicken? Man, that is some good eats! I used The Barefoot Contessa recipe and it came out fantastic. I also made a bunch of sides using my Pinterest cooking page.
So the next time you need some inspiration on decorating, just look in a cupboard or cabinet that you haven’t opened in a long time, and maybe you will find something fabulous!
