I have also found the little counter to the left of my stove becomes a dump from the electronics that have to be charged, to papers, to suntan lotion. Ugh!
And finally, the counter where our main tv is seems to attract lots of books and old video and games that nobody is playing with. One would think my kids would have the strength to open the cabinets below the counter, which is where the cds and games live, but apparently they are like their mother and only seem to get stuff near to where it goes.
Well, I decided enough was enough and it was time to clear the clutter! Here is my process for straightening:
I start with one pile. The rule is, whatever I pick up MUST be put away immediately. I can’t put it down again until it is either in the garbage or where it is supposed to live. Even if I have to climb the stairs a thousand times- once I touch it it must be put away.
The second thing I make sure to do is focus on one pile at a time. If something belongs in a drawer, and that drawer is a mess, I don’t take the time right then to clean the drawer. I put it in the messy drawer and go back to the pile. Later I can tackle the other messes.
I find this to be the best way to clear my surfaces of all the stuff that has accumulated. Want to see?
Remember the first picture? Well this what my dining room table actually looks like. You couldn’t even tell it was wood in the first picture!
Here is what my entrance area is supposed to look like. Much better. Notice I added a small plate to contain my keys. Hasn’t helped yet- I still am putting my purse and keys on the dining room table (Which is past this entrance area! Arghhhhh!) But hopefully I can retrain my brain to use this instead of the dining room.
Here is the little counter to the left of my stove. I added a turquoise box I got at Target a while back to contain the electronics.
And finally here is the messy area by the TV. I find when my home is straightened up I feel less tense and more relaxed. You would think that would be enough to keep my mess contained, but you would be wrong. All in all it only took less than an hour to clean all four spaces. And my husband was thrilled when he got home!
So tell me, how do you keep the clutter contained in your homes? Do you straighten every day or let the mess build up and then clean? Let me know in the comments.
