In honor of Madonna’s birthday (which was yesterday) I thought it would be fun to do a little retrospective of Madonna’s vintage inspired looks through the years. I was never inspired by her 80’s looks, the ones that made her famous. I thought they were kind of trashy, plus I was more of a Pat Benatar girl with thick eyeliner and huge hoop earrings. But then Madonna entered the 90s and that is when I started to appreciate her look.
I know this is a terrible picture, but I really wanted to start with the green dress Madonna wore in the
Express Yourself video. You see, this was one of the most inspirational dresses of my teenage life. When I was in high school, the dresses for prom were hideous- all sequins, puffy skirts, bodices, etc. Nobody wore designer and nobody wore vintage. If you had to have your dress made, you kept that information to yourself because it wasn’t considered ‘cool’ if it didn’t come from Macy’s. But I wanted that green dress so bad. So I decided to rent a 1930s gown from a Hollywood costume shop! Want to see it?
Yes, that is me at age 18, ready for prom. I still adore that gown. It was white, not green, but it had the same 1930s look as the one in the Madonna video. I thought I looked amazing. Of course, as soon as I got to prom one jock said, ‘you look like Princess Leia’. He was right, but I always thought Leia was beautiful, so I took it as a compliment.
And then Madonna came out with Vogue. Oh my goodness, that video was momentous when it hit the airwaves. We all had to learn the hand movements and we all vogued like we were those fabulous dancers. I still remember being really pissed it lost the MTV Best Video award to Sinead O’Conner’s ‘Nothing Compares 2U”. Ugh. I just watched her video again. She looks up, she looks down, she walks around. BORING! (as an aside, did you know Prince wrote that song?) But Madonna’s video was full of vintage glamour, dancing, intrigue, and totally hot guys. What more could a teenage girl ask for?
After that Madonna got into her S&M phase and I tuned out again. But I leave you with some of Madonna’s more vintage inspired outfits:
So here’s to you Madge. Happy Birthday you glamorous bitch, without you there would be no Gaga. You are an original. Cheers!
